Just curious,

If wanted wanted to have an almost unlimited amount of storage by connecting
many USB hard drives, what happens when all the assignable letters for
removeable drives from a through z are used up?

Thnx

You're up the unmentionable creek without a paddle unless you use
something that hides the individual drives from the OS and combines them etc.

Ok, I swim well, but i thought USB can handle 127 devices.

See, I have MCE2005 with hundreds of DVDs ripped to my HD as well as HDTV
recordings, hence the need for limitless storage and hence for many USB
drives.

One obvious answer is that you abandon Windows and use an OS that can
handle as many drives as you like.

NTFS Dynamic disks ? I bet they don;t work on detachable
storage. I've got to play with this one of these days.

As a practical matter, if you set up a Linux SAMBA server with LVM
(Logical Volume Manager) you'll be able to add disks to enlarge the
shared folder as needed with only practical limits like chassis
size. Once in a while you'll need to move into a new, larger chassis
or copy the data to the latest xxxGB disks, but stuff gets cheaper all
the time.

I hate external USB disk cases and avoid them except for one-off
backups for system upgrades, if then.

Yes, but that isnt necessarily 127 drives, there
are a lot more devices than just USB drives.

Like I said, they dont necessarily have to have drive letters.
