Maximum number of characters to name a Word document?

What is the maximum number of characters that can be used to name a Word
document when saving or renamimg a file?

The limit is set by Windows, not by Word. It's 255 characters
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filename).

If you try to type the full path and file name in a dialog box, you'll often
run into a limit of 255 characters for the entire entry, not just the file
name part.
