32-bit XP should be able to handle up to 2TB disks in its present form.
NTFS is no problem, but the built-in tool won't format a FAT32 partition
greater than 32GB

Did you try using the installation software provided by the
manufacturer of the drive? You can get it at their website.

you need to be up to date on service packs .
SP1 and or SP2 would be better yet.

XP is up to date with SP 2...tried partitioning the drive into 4 parts
(roughly 120gb each)...still no success...if all else fails would my chances
be better if I used this drive externally through USB or Firewire...thanx.

If thats the case you had better use the hd manufacturers disk checking
utility, either the disk is bad or the connections are.
Its detected correctly in the bios I assume

Frank:
The response you rec'd from DL is the correct (& only) course of action to
take at this point. As DL indicated, download and use the HDD diagnostic
utility that you can obtain from the website of the disk's manufacturer. You
*must* determine whether you're dealing with a defective drive at this time.
For the moment do not consider installing the drive in some external
enclosure.

I assume the disk is under warranty so there should be no problem in getting
a replacement from the manuf. should the disk prove defective.

is you bios up to date, and have you selected the proper drive type in the bios.

All is well in the BIOS and Windows sees the drive as RAW...the drive is
abnormally noisy on start-up and shut-down and there is a chance that it may
be defective or damaged but would that not show up in the BIOS...Frank from
Montreal

Being defective wont show in the bios or anywhere within windows
Only a bootable disk checking utility will properly test your drive.
Being noisy is an indication of a faulty drive
