Maximum Files Allowed in one folder???

I know there is a rather large limit to files listed right on the root
directory, but not sure there IS a limit to files within a folder...
 
The maximun size of a folder is 64K filenames. A long file name uses more
than one entry. So 20-40,000 is a average.

No, this isn't correct. The root folder has a limit of 512
*entries* (entries, not files and folder, because long file names
use multiple entries). Outside of the root folder, the limit is
very large--64k, if I remember correctly.

Along the same thread, what are the directory and filename limitations
of NTFS 5? Is there even a root directory limitation like FAT has?

I was asking the question because I have a folder with 2,500 mp3 files in
it.
 
actually, that 512 file limit in the root directory is no longer the case
with FAT32 or NTFS

Alex,

The "tested" maximum number of files per directory on NTFS is 20 Million

As regards the file and pathname limits:-
The path may be up to 32,768 Unicode characters long (65536 bytes).
A path component may be up to 255 Unicode characters

Hi Kamal,

For FAT32, the "theoratical" limit is 65,534 files or folders per folder.
[If you use long filenames, you will reduce the number of files per folder.]
