Maximizing photo size automatically

What do you mean by "maximum size on my screen"?
Do you want a particular photo to fill your entire screen, with no black or
white space around the photo?

I would like it to fill the screen, but not do away with toolbars, etc. My
photo collection contains photos of various sizes. I know how to increase the
size of each photo, but having to do it hundreds of times is difficult.

How much space a photo will occupy on your screen depends on two factors:
1. Your screen resolution. You can find this by right click on your desktop,
click on Properties and click on the Setting tabs. You will see two numbers,
say something like 1280 x 1024 pixels. If you have a photo of these exact
dimensions, it will fit the screen. If exactly double, the software will fit
it in, if exactly half it will occupy half the screen.
2. The aspect ratio of your screen. This is simply the width divided by the
height. In the above example 1280/1024 = 1.25. So if you have a photo of
1280 x 1280 (a perfect square), even if you have more than enough pixels, a
square cannot fit into a rectangle. The software will then display this
photo with white or black space around it.

I understand, but that doesn't solve my problem of trying to automatically
resize my thousands of photos. Is there some software that would handle the
job/

I don't think so, and for a good reason.
Suppose such software exists.
1. Take a square photo and fill your rectangular screen. Easy enough to do,
but all the objects in the photo would be distorted.
2. Take a rectangular photo of the exact same aspect ratio of your screen
but containing half the number of pixels. Easy enough to fill your screen,
but the quality of the display would now be poor.

Maybe I don't quite understand your question.
You say you do this by hand.
Can you tell me how you do this and what is your purpose for doing this and
when you do this by hand are you satisfied with the quality of the display?

HOW: Windows Picture and Fax View has magnification buttons. But it has to
be done for each picture ever time viewed.

PURPOSE: To fit 853x480 video snap-shot picture to the screen so it's not
so small and can be seen better without being right up to the screen.

DISPLAY QUALITY SATISFACTION: Yes.

I would like for Windows Picture and Fax Viewer to have a selectable Fit
Display Screen feature, in which it enlarges small pictures to fit the
screen similar to how it shrinks large pictures to fit the screen. Even,
and especially, in slideshow mode.

Not going to happen with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.
However, you can use free software here:
www.irfanview.com
This software will automatically display a slide show full screen and has a
variety of automatic display size option to view pictures.

Thanks for your help. I really just want to resize, typically by zooming,
all my pics which require it. The software you recommended should solve the
problem.
