Version of outlook? It should be the same size as the window, less toolbars
and navigation panes.

2003 Version - my contacts and calender open to a small box - even if I
maximize it by pulling the sides and/or click on the maximize box. When I
close it down, it always opens back up to a small box. Is there a settting
that I'm missing somewhere?

The calendar or contacts pane in Outlook's main window or when you double
click on a contact or appointment?
If you mean the opened contact or event/appointment, resize the window and
close it. The size should be remembered during the current session - and
when you close outlook, verify it is closed in tasks manager's processes
tab. If it is, it should remember the window sizes.
