maximising windows

I have bought a new sony vaio laptop and installed a new isp's user
interface. I am using IE6 but i just cannot get links to open in maximise. I
have tried all of the prescribed remedies ie opening a link in a new
window... closing the existing window... dragging the open link window to
max and then using the close cmd but nothing works. all links open in 3/4
screen it is infuriating please help.

Windows remembers the size of the last Normal IE window closed.
Open such a link.
Don't use the maximize button.
Stretch the edges/corners so that the window fills the screen.
Close all other IE windows.
Close the stretched window.
