Max ram for Mesah Matrix xp1600+

i am upgrading my old Mesh Matrix desktop which is an Amd athlon xp1600+.
the original ram installed was 512mb.

when i installed 1gb it booted up fine, but when i put 2gb of ram in it would not go past the boot up and load windows.

i did do a check on the internet about the motherboard and it does say it can take 2gb.

does anybody know why it wont load windows xp with 2gb.

What MB is being used ?

they are 2 of a kind
1gb pc2100 ddr 266mhz

the first stick worked, but installing the second just doesnt go any further than boot up.

HAve you swapped them about, tired one at a time to see if one is not faulty..?
