I'm disabled meaning that I'm in an electric wheelchair
and I use a laptop computer to communicate with. I'm
just wondering does Microsoft sell any math software
where I can set up my math homework problems, then figure
them out myself? I'm a very visual person so I need see
the math homework problems, then go step by step. I'm
taking a basic math class, but it is literally taking me
between 6 to 8 hours to do math homework because I'm
doing it all in Microsoft Word.

Hi Mark,

Have you tried using the Equation Editor in Word?

Here is an exchange of emails on this sort of thing with Bob Mathews of
Design Science the company that make the Equation Editor that may be of
interest/help to you:

Hi Bob,

Thanks for helping this guy out. Here is a subsequent message that I
received from him:

Hi Doug:

Just wanted to let you know that my cousin and I contacted Bob Mathews about
MathType. In MathType custom toolbars can be created and therefore it will
make the equation entry a little faster. Her son is the one with MD and is
going to use this package. After she evaluates the package we will know for
sure but in all liklihood this is what will be used.

A number of people in my cousin's MD support group are now aware of the WORD
Equation Editor and MathType. Do a lot of people know about the Equation
Editor? I found out when I was teaching classes and need to enter
equations.

We both want to thank you for your help in this and especially for putting
us in touch with Bob Mathews.

Subject: Re: Equation Editor Special Needs

Jerrold, thanks for writing. I'm interpreting from the way you
phrased your question that you would like the toolbars to be a
part of Word (or other word processor), rather than having to go
into a separate application. If that's the case, I don't know of
any product that will satisfy this need. The architecture of
Word itself makes this type of application highly impractical,
if not impossible.

However, if it's acceptable to go into a separate application
like MathType (which can be accessed with a single mouse click),
then you have access to the full palette of symbols and
templates. The way MathType is set up by default, the user
clicks on a palette, then the palette drops down to reveal the
symbols or templates available within that palette. That's also
the way Equation Editor works, but MathType has an additional
feature not available in Equation Editor. In MathType, the user
can place often-used symbols, templates, or even entire
equations on the toolbar for easy access later. In the case of
your relative with MD, it may be easier for someone else to set
up the toolbars for him in advance.

There is a 30-day full-featured evaluation copy of MathType
available on our web site for free download. My suggestion is to
try that and see how well it works for you and your relative. If
you decide to buy it, the academic price is $99 USD (plus
shipping, if you want a CD and a hard-copy manual -- a PDF copy
of the manual is included with the download).

Please let me know if you have further questions or concerns.
