At work our Win2003 Domain Controller complains about one of our staff
company-owned WinXP Pro SP2 laptops. The Event Viewer says:

The master browser has received a server announcement from the
computer <laptop computername> that believes that it is the master browser
for the
domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_<string of hex chars>.
The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.

I checked today and the Computer Browser service was already disabled and
stopped. Both the laptop and the DC are on the same subnet/broadcast domain.

Any ideas?

There is a network setting, that tells each pc, in win 2k, whether it
is the master browser or just doesn't care. You need to change it on
the laptop. I think it is under the network settings, and then in the
advanced settings, way down in there. I seem to remember a drop down
list that has the setting in it.

Either stop the browser service on the said laptops/desktops, or open
rededit:

HKLM\System\Current_control_set\services\browser\parameters set
MaintainServerList to FALSE.
