Tom B.

I keep receiving mass mailings of the Swen virus
disguised as "Microsoft Securtity Update". I've never
been foolish enough to open any of them and I always
delete or block or filter them, but to no avail. Here's a
link to the exact page in snopes.com that accurately
describes this evil mass mailing of Swen I keep getting:
http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/patch.asp#add
(Can't add a link, so you'll have to copy and paste in
adress box.) My question is: How do I prevent this from
continuing to morph itself and multiply in my inbox? I
already tried to download the patch required to prevent
it, and the Microsoft site where I tried downloading the
patch said I didn't need it, so I apparently already have
the patch! I'm exasperated. Please help. Thank you. Tom B.

Hi,
First of all you need to set some Message Rules (or Custom Filters) to your
mail stating to delete mails where the subject line contain words like
"Microsoft" or "Security" or "Admin" or "Administrator" or any of the
uncommon words in the subject line of these bogus mails. Just be careful not
to use words that can be from a valid mail subject line.
Then if you are not yet using a fake email add, it is best to use one before
posting here.

Thanks for your response. I've already added every
conceivable combination of these filters and I STILL get
these emails. One thing: In the filter section where you
add the heading or footer keywords to filter, at the top
is a box entitled Filter Type or Filter Name. What do I
put there? Maybe that's why it isn't working? Other than
that, I've tried that. Thank you.

The Filter Name textbox is optional. I don't know why you are still
receiving these mail. I hope I'm not underestimating what you have done, but
please make sure that you have filters in the From Header textbox as well as
filters in the Subject textbox.
And Move the message to Trash.
This has worked for me both in my Yahoo! and Hotmail inboxes.
Other than these I can't think of anything else.

I, too, am getting these mass mailings in my Yahoo and MSN email.
I've been able to filter most of them out of my msn account using the
filters at hotmail. However, the limited filter at my Yahoo free email
account does not seem to have the ability to DELETE the unwanted
email. The choice only seems to be to move it to another folder..
like bulk mail. This does not solve the problem, however, because
my email still fills up and becomes worthless.

Anyone have a solution to this problem for the free Yahoo email account?

Thanks.

Tom,

I seem to have put a stop to the downloading of most of them by setting up an email rule to delete, from the server, any email over 100KB in size.

When you've set up the rule click on it,to highlight it,then click on MOVE UP repeatedly to move it to the top of your list of rules.

Of course this rule will be of no use to you if you normally receive emails of this sort of size that you actually do want.

To set up the rule I did this.

I clicked on TOOLS/MESSAGE RULES/MAIL/NEW.

Then I clicked on the box,in Section 1,next to WHERE THE MESSAGE SIZE IS MORE THAN SIZE to select it.

Then I clicked on the underlined SIZE and typed in 100 and clicked OK.

Then I moved to Section 2 and clicked the box next to DELETE IT FROM THE SERVER,to select that option.

Then I clicked OK then OK,on the next page,to create the rule.

Then I clicked on that rule,to highlight it,then kept on clicking on MOVE UP until that rule was at the top of all my MESSAGE RULES.

Then I clicked on OK again and that was it all done.

hmmm..
What email are you using. I am getting these damn attachments in both
my msn and yahoo email accounts. Neither seem to allow screening on
email size..just
subject header matter..and email address.. Yahoo is particularly
limiting in that it doesn't allow you to set up a delete rule...so my
yahoo email is useless.

Hi,
Trash must be one of the available folders where you can move your unwanted
mails. You can delete if you "move the mail to the trash folder".

The problem is not that I cannot delete it.
The problem is that I have to delete it and delete it and delete it..
again and again and again..

It fills up the mailbox..making it worthless.

What I need to be able to do is have these damn emails AUTOMATICALLy
delete...and never reach my in basket.

What I mean there is to "move your unwanted mails to the trash folder"
DURING setting up your filters. Sorry, this will be my last message. Good
luck.
