I have tried to follow the above instructions for making the contacts folder
in my outlook address book default, but I do not have the "Your folder name"
option when I choose the folder drop down menu in file menu. So I can't fix
the problem.

Which version of Outlook are you using? Also, how are you trying to mark
your Contacts folder as an address book?

Also, the second part of your question (sorry did not see it!) I am using the
Mark your contact folder for use with your address book solution as posted on
here as the solution...It asks for me to go to File menu, point to folder,
and then click Properties for your folder name..this is where the problem
lies, I only have Propeties for you inbox.

Right click on the Contacts folder then choose Properties from the context
menu that pops up

Who knows what "the above instructions" are, since you did not include them.
State EXACTLY what you did. Include your Outlook version.

sorry. Right, when I select the "to" in a new message, instead of contacts
being the default address book, I have personal adress book, which I then
have to scroll down to contacts before my addresses show. I followed your
instruction for "Mark you contact folder for use with your address book"
which entails 1. On the file Menu, point to Folder and then click properties
for your folder name. I do not have this "properties for your folder"option.
I only have properties for your inbox. How do I get contacts to be my default
address book?
Thanks. I have tried the last post suggestion, but does not work.

Actaully just figured it out myself. If you want your contacts folder to be
the default, select tools/Address book/tools/options and show contact first.
Thanks anyway

On a related topic, I'd like to understand the circumstances where the
Check-box used to mark the contact folder for use with the address book is
grayed out, i.e. not check-able.

I used the User Migration wizard to move from an old Vista computer to a new
Vista computer. When the wizard was done, my OL2003 settings worked on the
new computer as far as Send/Receive for all profiles. But when composing a
new message, the TO button did not pull up any address book even though
contacts were present. And as I described above, the check box was grayed
out. I was ultimately forced to resolve the problem by exporting the entire
set of Outlook HKCU registry keys from the old machine and re-importing them
to the new machine. I hope there is a more desirable meithod of solving this
problem should it re-occur.

Thanks.

The User Migration Tool does not work reliably enough to be used for
transferring Outlook settings. The only supported method for migrating
Outlook data is to create a new profile and recreate your mail accounts from
scratch. If you want to use a previous data file, then open it in your new
Outlook profile and set it to be the default. Restart Outlook and enable
your Contacts Folder as an email address book.
