Mark a message read with VBA

Hi,

How would I use the Outlook Rules wizard (Outlook 2000 SP3) to run a bit of
VBA code that would mark a message read and so prevent the "New Mail" icon
appear in the tray? I've no idea how to begin.

I need to do this because I'm creating spam filters, and also being a C++
programmer I'm interested in a techy way in how to do these things.

Someone in the outlook.general pointed me at the web site
http://www.slipstick.com/dev/code/clearenvicon.htm which answers some
questions. I'd still like to know more, though.
