Hi, Every time I want to attach a file, Vista goes to c:\. I want to save my
files somewhere else and have Vista know about it. Is this possible?

Help a cute girl in distress! :-)

I don't care what sex you are or how cute you are, but I'd like to
help if I could.

But, sorry to say, I can't understand your message. Can you try to be
more precise and descriptive?

Sure! Under C:\Desktop\My User Account\ , there are these folders on C:
Documents, Pictures, Downloads, Music, Saved Games, Videos. These were set
up automaitically when my user account was created on Vista. I don't want to
save my Pictures, Music, Videos on C:. I want to let Vista know, that
everytime I, for example, save a Video, to NOT point me to C:\Videos, and
forse me to have to manually navigate to the path and folder where I want my
Videos on F:. I want to save my Videos on F:\. How can I set it up?

The process for Vista is similar to XP.
- Click the Start Button (or whatever it's called in Vista)
- Right click on Documents
- Left Click on Properties
- On the screen that follows, click the Location Tab
- The current location will be displayed, select the "Move" button
- Browse to the desired new location

The process is the same for the "Pictures" or even "Favorites"
locations.

Good luck!

Jeff

Good luck

WARNING

Do not just change the location to E:\ . Hopefully Vista will tell you that
is a bad idea.
Before you change the location, create a directory on E:\ (such as
E:\mine\Music)

You can then change the location of the Music files by right click, location
and move to E:\mine\Music

Create the folder first, then change the location. Different folder for each
of the original folders, don't combine them.

Hi Michael,

Why exactly is that a bad idea?
I'm currently using my partition E:\ for music only, so I changed
the location of the music folder to the root of E:\.

I didn't encounter any problems yet, so I wonder what you mean.

I understand (I am leaving my locations where they were) that if you try to
change the location again you get a message that you can no longer change
the location. Has something to do with more than what it expects to be there
is there. Also some people that move one of the folders also tend to move
more than one of the folders, and they end up in the same place - merged
together and they cannot be unmerged.

Again, I have not done the moves but report what I have read here about woes
of moving directly to the root of a drive.

If you are trying to save to the folder named "My Documents" that folder is
a junction point in Vista, not an actual folder. The junction point is only
used to redirect legacy installation programs to the new location in Vista,
which is the "Documents" folder (without the "My").

Don't try to use the "My Documents" and "My Pictures".
Vista's defaults are now just "Documents" and "Pictures".

In Word 2003
Tools - Options - File Locations - Documents
browse to a folder you created on D:, like D:\Data\WordDocs
OK

Do the same in Excel, etc.
D:\Data\Spreadsheets

On my Word 2007, I can set the default save location.
Office Button
Word options
Save (left pane)

In my Office XP Word the settings are in
Tools
Options
File Locations

I would think the options settings would be in any Word between those also.

PS you do not want to save files at the root of any disk/partition. Create a
folder in the root and save things there. There is a limit on the number of
items that can be in the root and it not very big. (I think 256 items)

If you want Vista to remember where you moved your Documents folder, do
this...
click Start
right-click on Documents, select Properties
click Location
Find Target
navigate to D:\whatever
OK

Now, when you open Word and click on Save As...
and click on My Documents, it should point to D:\whatever

It is not a good idea to store files in the root (D:\)
