Mapping a Drive - Vista (laptop) to WinXP (Desktop)

I'm having major problems mapping a drive on my desktop (3 partitions
on desktop - C-JCC1, D-JCC2, E-JCC3) to my laptop. I'm running WinXP
SP3 on the Desktop and Vista (no SP1) on the laptop.

I have a home network setup via a Linksys 4-Port Router to have my
desktop and laptop share the Internet Connection. That works fine! I
need to share the E drive on the desktop with the laptop.

I have the desktop's E drive set to "Share" and the share name is
listed as "JCC3 (E)" in the share box. Both boxes are checked in the
Share Box. The Workgroup is the same on both machines.

I go to the laptop and attempt to Map a Network Drive and use the
"Browse" button to locate the drive to map to "Z" on the laptop. I
get an error on attempting to map;

\\Charlie\jcc3 (e) is not accessible. You might not have permission
to use this network resource. ..........
Not enough server storage is available to process this command.

And the drive is not mapped.

How do I resolve this problem and get my mapping accomplished?

I found it! On the laptop, Network Discovery and File Sharing are on.

No, when I try mapping the drive on the laptop, I get the error
message I stated earlier.

What I was asking is if the drive is shared on the XP side you should be able
to see and access it or folders within it from the Network page on Vista
without mapping it.

Is "File and Printer Sharing" turned on on the XP machine? It shouldn't let
you create a share if it isn't, but Windows is freaky sometimes.
In the firewall settings on the XP machine, is "File and Printer Sharing"
checked in the Exceptions?

Ok, what I have done is - On the Laptop - use the Run command, enter
the IP Address for Desktop, a box comes up with the "shared"
facilities (drives, folders, printers). Clicking on the drive,
produces the error - not access.

Is that what you were looking for? (I must admit, I am not an expert
at this, so, some of my answers might not be up to you standards)

I'm not running the Windows Firewall, I'm running Norton Internet
Security. But I completely uninstalled NIS on each machine via their
Norton Removal Tool and retried the map with the same error. While I
have Windows Firewall off, the File and Printer Sharing is checked.

May I ask, what Firewall are you using?

What I was suggesting was click on the Start Orb and in the right hand column
select Network. You should see the XP computer. Click on it. Do you see the
shared drive? If it is there, click on it. Does it allow access?

How long has the desktop computer been running? Rebooting the desktop
should fix the problem. However, after a few days, it will probably
return.

Ok, Paul,

Sorry for the confusion in my previous note!

I clicked Start/Network and the XP computer shows up. Double click on
it and a list of shared items on it is shown including the shared
drive "JCC3 (E)". Double clicking on the shared drive produces the
same error;

to use this network resource. Contact the admin................
Not enough server storage is available to process this command.

So, still can't get to it from the laptop.

Thanks for your patience and help. With everyone trying to help, I
hopeful of solving this situation soon.

It's my home desktop and I turn it off every night. Reboot sometimes
during the day, depending on what I am doing.

thread anymore...

What about usernames/passwords? Are the usernames being used the same, or
are both usernames set up on both machines with the necessary privileges?
If they aren't, are you using "Connect using another username" and entering
the XP username and password?

Even if you do none of the above, you still should get a dialog box asking
for the username/password. I suspect the error that needs the most
attention is the "Not enough server storage is available to process this
command."

that a problem?

I never get a box requesting a username/password. Do you have any
idea how to deal with/research the "Not enough server storage is
available to process this command"?

From a security standpoint, the blank password isn't advised, but for what
you're trying to do having the same username should help.

I was speaking in terms of the "Permissions" on the Sharing tab. Since
"Charlie" is an administrator on both machines, the privileges should be
correct.

There shouldn't be any problems then, unless you do actually have a password
for XP, and it is being entered automatically. TweakUI has a setting that
does this.

You could try setting a password, the same password, for both machines and
see if it helps.

Also, if this is an XP Pro, not XP Home, try disabling "Simple File
Sharing". Vista might not like it. To do this, in a Windows Explorer
Window, click the Tools menu, choose Folder Options. On the View tab, the
last item under Advanced Settings is what you're looking for. I know it
says "Recommended", but Simple File Sharing turns off Password Protected
Sharing. Vista doesn't like this, and expects a username and password to be
used. While this should only affect shares on a Vista machine, it might
affect trying to access shares on XP machines.
