Mapped drive dropping out

I have an odd problem with a connection to a local server share
(mapped drive) dropping. When attempting to use the drive (for
example to save an open file I'm working on) I often get a pop-up that
says:
An error occurred while reconnecting R: to \\server\share
Microsoft Windows Network: The local device name is already in use
The connection has not been restored

I don't actually have a problem saving the file(s), it works normally.
However, if I look in the Windows Explorer the network drive icon
for this drive almost always has a red "X" on it... and that message
always pops up.

I have 4 other connections to the same server from the same client
(different shares) that never have this issue. I use this
connection/drive repeatedly during the day. The network is very simple
with a win2K server (no DC) and matching user/password authorization
at login time. Hardware between the two is only a single switch... and
all the other connections between these systems stay up anyway so I
don't think there are any hardware issues.

Ideas ?

Do a search for "disconnect" on the Microsoft Support site
and it will tell you how to disable it. HOWEVER, this
does not always work. We spent an entire month going back
and forth with Microsoft Phone Support to fix this problem
on a PC. We tried so many different things that I
couldn't tell you which one actually worked.

Thanks. I'll look and see what I can find.
