Mapped drive doesn't show up during installation

Ok, this one has a few twists:

I have the 32-bit version of Vista Business. I am on a network with a domain
controlled by an NT4 domain controller, but I have not joined it.

I mapped a drive to said NT4 server (it hosts our ERP software), and tried
running the 16-bit client setup application for said ERP software. The
application runs just fine, but part of the setup process requires you to
point to a directory in the mapped drive, but the mapped drive does NOT show
up in the list of available drives, and it always did under 98/2000/XP. Any
ideas? Should I try joining the domain to see if that changes anything?

Since you are using NT 4, do you have WINS server? The link may help too,

We don't have a WINS server, but the installation process works just fine on
every other Windows OS from 98 through XP. Something is different about
Vista, and I'm trying to figure out what.
 
Have you enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP?

I figured it out: the drive wasn't mapped in an elevated user mode, so it
wouldn't show up in my available drives. I had to do this:

1) Open up the command prompt *in administrator mode*
2) Type net use driveletter: \\servername\share
3) Map the drive *again* using the standard GUI method

After that, it showed up in the installation. Weird!
