I've been able to map the network drives from my comp2,
but still can't access them from the "My Network Places"

any thoughts?

doh... well all my problems might be due to one comp is on
a FAT32 table... so converting now.. will see what
happens...

I do....

comp1 can see comp2, but it can't access it "\\comp2 is
not accessible, the server is not configured for
transations" is what I get, but I can from the run
command \\comp2\c get acces sto it, or map the drive...
but can't access it form the "my network places" folder,
but can see the icon.

this is the first time I've ever been stumped... lol its
got me good...

Could you repeat the exact error message (and check the spelling). I can't
think of an error message that uses the word "transations" or "transitions"
or "transactions".

Have you created user accounts on each machine for the other machine to use?

This problem has nothing to do with FAT32/NTFS and you do not need to be in
the same workgroup (although if you have only two machines there's no reason
for them not to be in the same workgroup). A workgroup is not a security
boundary. Sure, it may involve a couple of extra mouse-clicks to navigate
between workgroups, but since you're using UNC paths directly it's a
non-issue.

Also, if you could copy and paste the results of "ipconfig /all" from each
machine into this thread, it would be helpful.

That's true about the workgroups not being the same but he mentioned above
that he was unable to see the other computer in "My Network Places" - the
easy was to see all comp's there is to have them in the same workgroup.

lol.. oops its "transactions".. the rest of it, is as is...

"\\comp2 is not accessible
the server is not configured for transactions"

yet I can see the icon in "my network places", but get
that msg if I click on it. comp2 can see and access comp2
no problem.

I can also map the drives/folders I want, but thats all.

sorry, I didn't read the rest of your msg before I send
the last one...

I only have the built in admin & guets accounts on both
computers... comp2 can access comp1 with out any problems,
so I gather is not because of user issues.

I'll post my ifconfig /all for ya sure...

Try enabling NetBios over TCP/IP on the TCP/IP properties of each network
connection.

nope... the computers are connected through a hub, and
I've plugged the dsl into the hub as well, each ether card
is registered with telus, so there independant of each
other for internet access...

no firewalls/routers as of yet..

For the sake of this exercise, can you disable netbeui on both machines and
see what happens then? ...if it's still the same, temporarily disable TCP/IP
and try it then.

That will be your problem. Your two machines are not on the same subnet.
You are getting your configuration from a DHCP server, but which DHCP
server?

This is definitely a TCP/IP configuration issue.

Oli

That's right - he said there is no router so how's one subnet supposed to
know about the other?

Nevermind. Oli is right.

that is true, but thats not the problem, I've had the same
setup with both computers connected though the hub then
out to the dsl, and have been able to access each computer
thought the other... and I acn still access one though the
other, just not vise versa.. odd...

but there is a configuration problem some place, and I'm
not even sure which end is having the problem.. they both
comunicate (can send console msgs back and forth, can map
the drives, and can see the computer in "my network
places", but can't access it...

I'm basiclly down to reinstalling the os, because I've
exhausted all possibilities so far, and keep ending up
with the same result...

I do appreciate all your input, but something must be
corrupted.

Yup, you're correct again. His set-up doesn't make sense. Every time he
tries to make a connection to the other machine, the packets are being
routed to the ISP and back. It could be that the ISP doesn't allow netbios
traffic to their clients. That would explain the problem. BEFSR41 (40
bucks on Amazon) will do the trick.

perhaps I'm not being as clear as I should be to
understand, but no networking through my isp wasn't what I
was trying to do...

I was useing the hub to connect the two computers (had
more connected at one time) then just decied to add the
dsl to the hub so both can connect to the net...

I guess its wouldbe the same as the linksys router w/o the
hub... just that in my case lol... something isnt working
right...

but least I'm getting closer to the problem little by
little.. though for 40$ might as well dump the hub lol...

good point.. :D

thx

hmmm..

well for a test, I've copied a large file across from one
computer to the other while still connected to the dsl...
then disconnected the dsl, and the file was still send
accross... so its not going though the isp connection back
to my other computer...

In any case, the NetBios broadcasts are not being sent between the subnets
so that's why you can't see the machines.

It would be the same as the Linksys unit, but without the bits that actually
make it work (i.e. network address translation).

Seriously, save yourself a lot of hassle and get yourself a router. You
will get increased security and it will work, which your current method will
not.

Regards

Oli
