I have run the attachment 'Installer46.zl9' contained in a message
headed "Latest Network Critical Pack" from "Internet Security Center"
<[email protected]>" but now have a dialogue box, headed
"MAP132 Exception," appearing at regular intervals which requires me
to provide details of my email account including passwords. I am
suspicious. What is happening?

Alex.

I received 2 emails that looked exactly like the
Microsoft homepage, I went to install the patch after
that is when the MAPI32 exception page popped up asking
for passwords etc. This pops up every few minutes.
Did you get rid of yours? I don't know how to fix it.
Hope you or someone else can help.

I tried to send Alex and email I have the same problem as
he does. Obviously it is not letting my email get to
anyone, they come back as undeliverable.
Don't know how to stop this stupid popup MAPI32 from
coming up on my screen every few minutes.
Does anyone know how to fix it PLEASE???????
I need help.

Those were NOT from Microsoft. Microsoft does not send updates via eMail.
You have downloaded and installed a worm. You will need to get a virus
software.

Also note this is for Microsoft Access database software which is why you
aren't getting much help.

Good luck..

Even the best and most current virus checkers can't detect all worms. My old
hard drive, sitting right here on my desk (with my whole life's worth of work
on
it), has a worm that Norton, McAfee and another (don't recall which) could NOT

detect. All virus checkers were brand new and fully updated. My comp tech
tried
everything he knew to find it, but failed. But, anything that gets near this
HD
(as in installed into, disks made from, etc.), or anything this HD gets near,
gets infected.

I spoke with a data recovery tech last week (a 30 year retired NAVY
Cryptographer) who said, based on the symptoms, that he knew exactly what it
was, and that it attacks and hides on the DOS level, and that is why the AV
programs couldn't find it.

So, the *almighty* Norton, whom I ditched years ago for misrepresenting their
product, is not all they are cracked up to be. They (and the others) do NOT
have
a handle on virus and worm detection. Often, they are a waste of time and
money
(not to mention the damage *they* can cause to your machine).

Gary... while I am sorry for your mishap. Norton HAS released virus
updates to detect this worm (as well as, others in the past). It hasn't let
me down yet.

It missed one of the five variants of "blaster".
Further I don't think this is the forum to vent.

ALL M$ forums are fair game now. If they don't like it, they can for once START
TO LISTEN.

Hi Alex

You were right to be suspicious, but unfortunately you were not suspicious
enough. You obviously have ZoneAlarm installed on your machine and it tried
to protect you by renaming the attachment to ".zl9".

This is the Win32.Swen.A worm. You can read about it and download a utility
to remove it here: http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/virus.aspx?ID=36939

As Gina said, Microsoft will NEVER send a software update to you by email.
Updates are distributed via the WindowsUpdate mechanism.

Thank you for your help. I was mislead and mistook it for the update
messages I get from Microsoft and the 'ms' email address. I had not
noticed the different update procedure.
BTW, this newsgroup is for issues relating to security in Microsoft's
database product, MS Access.

Sorry I also misunderstood the title of the news group and read
"public.access" as available for everyone to access. I am just going
to put it down to my age - dementia cannot be that far away.

Alex.

And so is my option to ignore...
