map unc path

I'm making a VPN connection to my office. I can map network drives via the IP
address i.e 192.168.0.1/drive but want to be able to use the UNC path i.e
contoso1/drive.

I have set this up previously on another client machine. I think there is a
file somewhere that I need to edit to add the server IP address and UNC path
so that it can be mapped while using VPN. Can anyone point me in the right
direction?

Thanks.

DNS.

No, I don't think this is a DNS issue. Internal clients to the network can
map drives using the UNC path ok, it's only when I am connected via VPN.
Previously I edited a file (I think in the System32 directory) so that the
server IP was registerd with the UNC name so that I could map drives with it.

Probably;
%systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\lmhosts
