.....to Steve, NaresH, cimex, Sharon, and DCC for your responses to my query
about exe files on msconfig, one of which was the Blaster virus. Your
information was most helpful, and I have already taken steps to fix the
problem -- enabling the firewall and ordering Norton antivrus. I appreciate
what you've done.

Dan, you need to have an A V Software up and running while you wait for
Nortons.
Also, I think you'll find XP Firewall isn't that good, I disabled mine
and use Zone Alarm, suits me better, but that's my opinion, you have to
decide for yourself.

Thanks for the input, Anne. I'm not sure what AV software is and what it
does. However, since I'm not having any problems with Blaster right now
(hope I'm not jinxing myself) and have been notified that Norton program is
on the way, I'm being careful not to rock the boat.

AV= antivirus

Sorry Dan ... AV = Anti Virus.

Beware opening attachments, a lot are infected. Microsoft don't
generally send attachments via emall.
Symantec is a good site to get the necessary tools from to eradicate
these nasties.
I don't have my AV scanning incoming or outgoing mail, if you keep it
updated it's base program should keep you safe enough.
Keep lurking, ;o) , surprising what tips you can pick up in here.
Happy computing.

Anne.

Microsoft NEVER sends attachments via email :-)

Sorry Dan ... AV = Anti Virus.

Ten seconds after I hit Send, Anne, I realized how I had garbled what I
intended to say. Ah, well, it isn't the first time I've done that in 18
years on the Net -- and won't be the last.

I'm almost paranoid about attachments. Won't even open them when they come
from family and friends without double-checking first.

18 years? LOL, Ive been online 9 weeks!
I'm eating humble pie!
Won't be the last time I make an ass of myself either. ;o)

Well, Anne, considering that I've had only five computers in those 18 years,
and the last one was a Win95 purchased 6 years ago, I'm way behind the
times -- which explains why this XP version makes me feel like I'm starting
all over again

I'm grateful for all the help people on this ng have provided.

Agan, many thanks to all.

Dan

Apart from one or two little quirks XP seems fairly stable.
The problems I have stem from the guy who gave the comp to me, he
removed a few bits from the OS, I didn't know they were missing till I
came to use them.
