Manually Selecting Files & Folders In The Windows Vista Backup Uti

In the Windows Vista Business Edition Backup Utility, how do I go about
selecting individual Files and Folders?

Yes, the Wizard makes it fairly idiot-proof to back up general "categories"
of files (Documents, Pictures, etc) but I only need to back up very specific
files and folders, not these broad general categories and/or groups which are
listed.

In XP Pro you had the option of using the Wizard if you wanted to, or you
could select individual files, at your instance, and do it "manually".

Everything else seems to be working properly, i.e., I can map and access my
NAS drive with no problem; I just need to discover where the option is
located for picking the individual files of my choice so they can be backed
up.

If this has been "specifically" answered elsewhere here in the Forum please
feel free to provide a link to the post.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Travis,

Unfortunately, the wizard is not that configurable. You can indicate the
category of files and limit which drives are backed up, but you cannot
cherry pick specific files/folders.

Thanks for the (unwelcome) news that I most assuredly didn't want to hear
(but don't worry, I won't shoot the [Windows?] Messenger).

But now please explain, if you will, why Microsoft would "go backwards" on
such an important thing as their backup program?

I can understand the utility of backing-up "catagories" of files and
what-not for the new and unsophisticated users, but why strip-away such a
basic function as being able to select and segregate-out various files and
folders, especially since such a feature was available in the previous
version?

I would not characterize this as being able to do so something which only a
so-called "power user" would need or be interested in, and it sure couldn't
be that much trouble to retain that very basic capability leftover from XP.

So, what gives?

As a last resort I suppose I could revert to the backup program in Live
OneCare, but for a number of reasons I would rather stick with the one
"natively" built into Vista Business Edition; I just reject its "all or
nothing" approach to saving various files.

Further enlightenment as to the "whys & wherefores" of this apparent
screw-up on good ol' Microsoft's part would be appreciated.

Hi,

What can I say? They made a decision to cater to the unsophisticated user,
which really has become the more prevalant user base. I can understand why,
as outside of the core OS, most features are really very basic in nature. A
sophisticated user is more likely to use a third party product for this and
other chores (like CD burning, disk utilities, etc.) so Microsoft has no
real incentive to invest a lot in a more customizable program.

webJose,

All I see here is your reply post and not the OP. With that said, I'm
guessing you are looking for a Backup program that works for what you want
to backup and not what MS has to offer. If so, check out this little app
which is FREE and works very well.
