This procedure still does not allow for downloads such as SP1 for XP
and other assumedly important downloads.
How does one d/l these since d/l'ing on a DU modem takes forever.
SP1 is available from the catalog but is a 125+ MB download. That is rather
large if using dial-up. Instead of downloading via the dial-up account I
had at the time, I ordered it from MS. The link to order the SP1a CD is at
the bottom of this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp
Another CD to order (Windows XP Security Update CD) can be found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp
I have ordered this too. Even though I no longer have dial-up, I still
prefer having a "hard copy" on hand.
Also, there is a trick that some folks use (some that I have great respect
for when it comes to Windows) with the update site. I've never tried it
because I'm not entirely confident about the results but you're entitled to
make your own decision:
The downloads selected at the main update page initially go to the
Temporary Internet Files folder. When the download is complete, they show
up in the WUpdate folder. At this point you see a license prompt on the
screen and are asked to accept or decline. Before accepting (which in turn
starts the installation), go to the WUpdate folder and copy its contents to
another folder. You've just created a backup of the currently selected
updates.
