I have a new W2K Server that I am going to use to replace
my old W2K DNS server. It is going to have the same name
and the same IP. I know all the info for the zones on my
old server are stored in \\%system%\winnt\system32\dns.
But when I stop the DNS service on the new server and
copy the DNS folder from the old server and start the
service back, the new server does not read the zone
information. It there any way to copy the zone data over
without having to recreate it.

Hi
You have to recreate the zones in the gui, during that process it asks to
create a new zone or use existing file, you choose use existing file and
the data will be used from the file you placed in the DNS directory. The
only supported way is to use the GUI.... BUT, the zones that show it in the
GUI are actually registry entries that point to the files. So "in theory"
;) you can export the zones registry key from the old server and import on
the new server.
Note that this doesn't work properly if the IP and Name are different on
the servers. You have to recreate all the NSrecords when they dont' match,
so it is better off to use the GUI.. In your case it shouldn't be a
problem.

Location. Possibley 2 locations so make sure to check both.

1. HKLM\System\CCS\services\DNS\zones
More likley
2. HKLM\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentVersion\DNS Server\zones

Thanks!
