Manual NIC install mfr. list has two entries???

The list should contain 30-50 manufacturers. While trying to install
SMC1244TX driver for XP the machine locked up and had to do a hard
reboot. I believe the driver definitions list that comes with Windows
XP got hammered up. How do I rebuild this list without reinstalling
Windows XP?

This is pretty tricky... I'd do this way
- boot in safe mode.
- remove all traces of the SMC driver you tried to install. If you are not sure how - leave it for now.
- backup everything in INF folder (enable viewing all hidden files, extensions etc).
- delete all INFs except of OEM*.INF.
- delete *.PNF
- copy to INF folder all INFs from another healthy machine with same service pack,
again except of OEM*.INF.
- reboot normally and try to install again.
