I have tried to promote a second DC of a Win2K3 domain, and I got a
error message explaining there is no DC configured on the DNS for
that domain.
Does anybody know how to check or configure manually the DNS in
this case?
Follow the link in the other response for Danny, but here
are the keys:
1) Dynamic DNS zone with the same name corresponding to
your new AD Domain
2) If you use other DNS zones, especially the parent of that zone
you must arrange to resolve them all from each of your DNS
servers -- typically this involves "delegating" from the
parent zone (especially if that is internal also).
3) Point the NIC\IP properties for DNS server of ALL clients at
this internal DNS server (set)
4) #3 includes DCs, DNS and other server
- they are "DNS clients" too!!!
5) If you change any of the above on a DC or that might affect a
DC (like delegation or turning on dynamic lookups) then you
must restart the NetLogon process on ALL AFFECTED DCs.
Once you have a DC, you can run "DCDiag" (with or without the
/fix switch) to see if things are setup correctly.
/fix offers LIMITED assistance in fixing things and personally I
prefer to find the problem and understand it. Your choice.
If you use /fix, always run DCDiag a second time to see if any
problems are left.
