Recently I searched for all instances of a particular file. When the
search stopped I highlighted all the instances and tried to delete
them. The search began again and XP really got it's knickers in a knot
with a host of error messages.

I tried again this time manually stopping the search...Same result.

Do I have a local problem with my installation? What am I doing wrong?
Maybe search is not intended to undertake such tasks.

Many thanks in advance and for help in the past.

What types of files, where are they located, what are the names?

Otherwise any answer is a guess.

Hi! Phil it makes no difference what files they are or where that are
from. When the search stops, I hightlight files for deletion or files
to be moved, as soon as the deletion or moving process begins the
search restarts and confusion reigns.

This occurs even if I delete each file separately from the search
panel, the instant deletion begins search starts itself again.

To be certain of my facts, I have just tried it once more with the
same result. I would expect that once the search stops it should
remain that way until manually invoked.

Pete, when I use XP Search I see the same thing. Search refreshes
dynamically. The updating of this window can be quite dramatic when working
with a large number of files. My solution has been to use a different
Search tool. Updating of search criteria is performed on a manual basis
instead of the automatic behavior of XP Search. I use some shareware called
File Locator Pro. It has a baby brother, Agent Ransack, which is free. Both
can be found here: http://www.mythicsoft.com

Another approach would be taking extra time and making an extra effort to
files to permanent locations when they're saved. This does not work well
for me as I collect volumes of info and snippets on the fly and organize
when I have extra time. Depending on the data you're handling, it might
work for you.

Thanks Sharon, glad someone else had this problem as well, and not
just my hamfistedness. Thanks for the advice and am using Agent
Ransack with far more predictable results. Many thanks for the help.
