I'm setting up a new print server at my company and
wonder what the best way to configure the IP of the
printer is. Should I use DHCP to do this or only rely on
DHCP for dynamic IP adresses? Im currently using an HP
Laser Jet 4050 where the IP was set on the printer
itself. Just want to know some best practices.

Either use a static IP or if you use DHCP create a treservation for
the printer's MAC address. That way you always have the same IP.

How do I get the printer's MAC address?

You should be able to retrieve this information from the printer's settings.

1. Make sure the printer is on and the READY message is displayed.
2. Press [Menu] until the display reads INFORMATION MENU.
3 Press [Item] until the display reads PRINT CONFIGURATION.
4 Press [Select] to print.

The resulting print-out should provide you with your current set-up along
with the MAC address.

Sorry about the link, Eric. Here is information that might help. Microsoft
says;

"You might want to assign network printers and certain servers DHCP
reservations to ensure that they always have the same IP address, but
continue to receive updated configuration information from the DHCP server.
For example, create reservations for servers that must always have the same
IP address, such as:

Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) and Domain Name System (DNS) servers
Print servers that use TCP/IP print services
Firewalls
Routers
DHCP-enabled clients receive any available options, such as DNS server or
router (default gateway), from the DHCP server when they renew their leases.
If these devices are manually configured, an administrator must reconfigure
each device individually when a change occurs.

To create a reservation
In the DHCP snap-in, expand the scope for which you want to create a
reservation.
Select and right-click Reservations, and then click New Reservation.
In the New Reservation dialog box, enter the Reservation name, IP address,
MAC address, and Description of the reservation.
Select the appropriate Supported types: DHCP only, BOOTP only, or Both.
Click Add."

HTH,

No, the link was very helpful (I found the below
information) and I found the MAC address too. Right now,
I don't believe the printer is configured to look at DHCP
(as it isn't listed in the Reservations or Address
leases), but rather we configured a fixed IP for it.

As a best practice, would you suggest doing the below?

Yes. I would reserve a dedicated range of IPs for your printers. This will
allow your printer to have an assigned IP while reaping the benefits that
DHCP provides.

HTH.

Thanks for all of your help!
