Managing distribution lists

I am trying to manage several distribution lists from the master contact
list. Is there a way to use the categories option to update and maintain a
distribution list automatically?

Since you want to use categories, there's no need for distribution lists.
Just assign the same category to all related contacts. When you want to
send to that bunch of people, view your Contact folder By Category, select
the category containing the people you want and then click Actions>New
Message to Contact.

DL's are essentially featureless. You can't even drag and drop the members
of one into another.
Few of us use DL's for that reason.
