I look after a small network of varied servers, and want a
simple basic management system to monitor processor, free
disk space etc. Can someone point in the direction of the
most simple application to manage this (preferably built
into windows or its apps). Thanks

hi
have you tried mmc with the various snap-ins, you can
administer remote servers provided you have net
connections.

Dear Andrew,

Thank you for your post.

My name is Laura and it is my pleasure to work with you on this post. Just
as Calum has suggested, one of the primary administrative tools you use to
manage Windows 2000 is the MMC. The MMC provides a standardized method to
create, save, and open administrative tools. It unifies and simplifies
day-to-day management tasks. The MMC does not provide management functions
itself, but it is the program that hosts management applications called
snap-ins, which you use to perform one or more administrative tasks.

The MMC allows you to do the following:

" Perform most administrative tasks by using only the MMC Being able to use
one interface instead of numerous interfaces saves time.
" Centralize administration You can use MMC consoles to perform the
majority of your administrative tasks from one computer.
" Use most snap-ins for remote administration Not all snap-ins are
available for remote administration, so Windows 2000 prompts you with a
dialog box when you can use the snap-in for remote administration.
" Build a customized console MMC provides for the creation of specialized
consoles containing all or part of multiple snap-ins. These custom consoles
can then be distributed to support groups in order to delegate
administrative tasks.

For more information about it, please refer to the following link:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/howitworks/management/mmcover.
asp

You can also create and save a custom console by referring to the following
Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

310422 HOW TO: Create and Save a Custom Console by Using Microsoft
Management
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310422

If anything is unclear, please feel free to post back. We are glad to be of
assistance.

Have a nice day!

Dear Andrew,

Thank you for your update. I understand that when you tried to use the Disk
Management snap-in, you received many error messages. There may be
difference causes for different servers. You may need to check them one by
one.

Please check whether the Logical Disk Manager service and the Logical Disk
Manager Administrative Service are set to Automatic and are started on each
server that has problems. In addition, please log on the problematic server
locally as the local administrator to see whether you can open the Disk
Management snap-in.

In addition, please refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article
to ensure that the DCOM properties are configured properly on each server:

264910 Access to Disk Manager Is Denied

Laura,

Thanks for your help so far, you have been very helpful - by uninstalling
the DELL array manager and run the dcomcnfg I have managed to get the disk
manager from my servers working in the MMC of my local computer (step one
solved). I have also added the performance monitor and am trying to set-up
an alert when disk space on a remote server gets low. The main issue I have
now is that the object I need to monitor "LogicalDisk" is not available
remotely via performance logs and alerts - it seems to only be available
locally - should I see it or am I looking for the impossible. Thanks

Dear Andrew,

I understand that the "LogicalDisk" counter is not displayed when you
connect to the remote computer. Here, I would like to confirm that the you
can select the LogicalDisk counter when you use the MMC locally on the
specific server.

Based on my experience, the LogicalDisk counter must be enabled before you
can use it. Please perform the following steps to enable the LogicalDisk
counters on the all the servers test this issue again:

1. Click Start click Run, type "cmd" (without the quotation marks), and
then press ENTER.

2. Type "diskperf -yv" (without the quotation marks) and then press ENTER
to enable the disk performance counters for logical drives or storage
volumes.

3. Restart the computer to load the LogicalDisk counters.

Base article:

have you tried mmc with the various snap-ins, you can
administer remote servers provided you have net
connections.

Servers Alive (aka salive) from

http://www.woodstone.nu/salive/

Can do the things you describe, and lots more.
Is real neat. It's free, limited to managing 10 devices. If
you like it the full version is about $150. I've used
it for lots of small networks, or parts of big ones.

Very easy to start with.

No relation, just a happy customer.
