Hopefully, I'm in the "old" web based group I was in now that I've
uploaded all these posts.
If not, its still XP basics, no?

You'll be glad to hear that the revving sound from the CPU (new HP
desktop) has ceased--I've had a large box fan on the floor all the time
my computer has been on. FYI: when I shut down, I also shut off my surge
suppressor--all current.

Your website is awesome, and I now have Hushmail. The OE directions on
the link you gave me "took" me to that, as well.

So far, so good, except for a post I made earlier about the RAM
indicated on My Computer/Properties. Thank you again for everything.

Yes, here you are posting in windowsxp.basics using Outlook Express. Well
done!

I don't see your post about the RAM question, but I'll look for it. The most
common question about RAM is "I thought I had 512MB, why does it only show
384?". The answer to that (if that in fact is your question) is that you
have shared RAM with the video. This is common when the video is on the
motherboard and not a separate card. I don't remember how much RAM is in
your machine, but for your purposes I wouldn't want less than 1GB; 2GB
would be better. If you have less than 1GB of RAM, that coupled with the
overheating could definitely be why you are getting freezing in your Dragon
and the other specialty software.

If the revving sound stopped when you moved the computer and aimed a box fan
at it, then your machine was definitely getting too hot. You should have
the tech clean it out, check the fans, etc.

Since you have WinXP SP2 you will want this update for OE:
There are two articles, KB918766 and KB918651, but the latter is not
currently available. The download link is
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...78-f325-4a95-98c2-98af2256ccc3&DisplayLang=en

It places the backup in Recycled, usually overwriting any earlier backup of
the
same folder(s). To use it, copy it to the store folder, delete the one you
want to replace and then rename the BAK file to DBX. (It's a bit more
complicated if the messed up DBX file isn't there or contains messages that
are hew that you want to keep.

My updates are automatically downloaded from MS--however, when my problems began, I'd received two via e-mail---and they did open to the MS website. I don't think I downloaded anything but I once ran a check to see if I needed any Updates.

Wouldn't this problem have been coverer in the automatic Updates from MS (that comes in my taskbar)? I'm blind, so this is a risky situation. I used adaptive equipment, but ...

Thank YOU, so very much.

I'll let Frank handle any questions about OE since I don't use it, but your
first sentence is the telling one - Microsoft *never* sends updates via
email attachments. Never. That's how the Bad Guys trick users into
installing viruses. Frankly, this thread has been so long I don't even
remember if you addressed the virus/malware possibility (and no, I'm not
complaining about the length of the thread!). I *think* we did, but just in
case:

Firstly, I did not have a question re OE, hence wondered about creating a DBX file. Secondly, the e-mail from MS did not have an attachment, only the direct link to their Windows Updates site. I checked both of those emails in Properties before I opened them, and copied the headers, sent them to my DSL company for an opinion. They were from MS. Really, I'm not trusting MS very much right now.

Yes, I run AdAware and Spyblaster, at least twice a week, and have 2006 NSW, but only run the AV (daily) due to the problem I mentioned of finding all of my Profile files for Dragon in the "Norton Protected Recycle Bin" after doing a "One Button Check-Up"--over 600 files were removed including Windows files. Then, they disappeared after I realized I could re-install them, and after I'd "read" another 13 hrs into Dragon training.

Thank you for your response and thoughtfulness--again!

I swear to all of you, I AM NOT doing this. Its NSW or XP Pro--my computer is less than 9 mos. old. This is enough to make me turn to an old word processor, or gray, at least. Grrrrr BTW my ref. to OE was a link that Malke gave me to use OE and other options for this group, instead of the web based entry.

MS NEVER sends updates by email.

No, this update is not considered important enough for automatic updates. I
don't know why and we complained about that. Didn't do us much good.

In OE | Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder
The folder and its files are hidden so you will have to set whatever you're
using to show hidden files and folders.
