How do I make an XP recovery disk? Searched on XP Help, but didn't find
anything except a blurb on the Automatic Recovery Console.

No need. The XP CD is bootable and contains recovery tools.

New but related question: can I use my XP cd in a friend's computer to
regain control when it's jammed up from a virus? He has XP too, but a
slightly different version than mine (both are for home XP).
I've been told that the cds we get with bundled software only work with that
particular computer brand/model. Is this true?
If so, what do I need to be able to go in and get initial control of any
jammed up pc with XP?

If the computer and Windows are OEM, you most likely can use the CD
only with the computer shipped.
Contact the manufacturer or check the manual for CD capabilities since
all OEMS do it differently.
