Making Updates Permanent

I have downloaded and installed most recent updates via
Automatic Update feature. 15 min of updates, and my free
space on HD shrinks by 1.5G! Possible explanation is that
the update installation process saves all the old data,
to make the updates reversible. I am not planning to back
out updates and do not remember of any "update recall"
precedent. Is it possible to delete the back-out data,
make updates permanent, and free disk space?

Hi,

When you install updates, restore points are created by System Restore so
that you can roll back your machine in-case there are any issues after the
update installation. The disk-space mentioned by you may have been taken up
due to this.

If you are very sure that you would not need these restore points, open up
My Computer and right click on your C: drive and select properties. Click on
Disk Cleanup on the disk-drive properties page. After the disk-cleanup
wizard has calculated the free-space that would be gained, flip to the 'More
options' tab and click on Clean up under 'System restore'. This action will
delete all but the last restore point.

However, it is recommended not to delete the restore points as they may come
handy if you face problems later on.

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Remove Hotfix Backup Files. The files that were replaced by most hotfixes are indeed backed up in $NtUninstallKB828028$ type folders in the Windows directory. My small utility removes the backup files and the Add/Remove Programs entries that would allow you to uninstall the hotfixes, should you feel it necessary.

Thanks Doug and Anando for your help. I ran disk clean-up
first, which freed the space, but did not delete
Add/Remove list entries, and then ran Doug's utility
which did the rest. I only wonder, if MS takes the
trouble to selectively install updates on the client's
PC, why not back them out in the same manner?
