I want to install the update KB823980-x86-ENU ..it tells me to do a system
backup first. How do I do this? When I use help I get the following
message :
You must be logged on as a computer administrator in order to complete this
procedure.

System Configuration Utility (Msconfig.exe) automates the routine
troubleshooting steps that Microsoft Product Support Services technicians
use when diagnosing Windows configuration issues. You can use this tool to
modify the system configuration through a process of elimination with check
boxes, reducing the risk of typing errors.

You can use System Restore to undo harmful changes to your computer. To open
System Restore from System Configuration Utility, on the General tab, click
Launch System Restore. For more information, click Related Topics.

Warning

a.. Microsoft strongly recommends that you do not use System Configuration
Utility to modify the Boot.ini file on your computer without the direction
of a Microsoft support professional. Doing so may render your computer
unusable.

For your help issue, go to the following site, go to line 235 and click

I assume you are unable to find backup on your system. If you have XP Pro,
go to Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\Backup.

If you have XP Home Edition, check the link below as backup is not installed
by default on XP Home Edition but is available on the CD.

The above assumes you have a retail version of XP Home Edition, if not,
whether or not backup is supplied with your system is at the option of the
system builder and unfortunately, many choose not to offer this feature. It
usually is not offered in systems that only came with recovery CD. In that
case, there are many third party backup applications available. I have XP
Pro but I prefer the following much more robust version of the backup
application. There is a trial version available at the following web site:
