Making sure registry identifies correct OS

On 24 May of 2003, the system was a dual boot Win 98/Win 200 system, with
Win 98 on C and Win 2000 on another drive
On that day, I also updated the Lexmark printer drivers.
The log file for that update indicates tat the system was Win 9x, which was
correct at time.

Last Fall, I upgraded the Win 98 system to Win 2000.
The other Win 2000 was a clean install.

Today, I tried to update the Lexmark printer drivers in the Win 2000 on C.
The installation failed because the Lexmark install incorrectly thinks that
the system is still Win 9x.

Is there someplace in the registry that retains this incorrect info?
If so, how can I change the OS identification?

Or would this info be included in some printer file?

I would delete the existing printer. Then start the "Add New Hardware"
wizard from Control Panel When you get to the point of driver installation
choose 'Have Disk'

Ayup, that's my next step.

I used Lexmark's tool to uninstall the drivers, but it would not uninstall
the bidirectional driver. As a result their driver installation program
would not install any drivers.

I was able to brute force the drivers by using Have Disk and pointing to the
backup driver location.

I'll first try to re-install the drivers from the Lexmark install program to
see whether the problem was fixed.
If unsuccessful, then I'll remove the printer. Likely means I would then
have to also
re-install Acrobat (full product) and other products that install printers
(if I can figure out which are they).

How does one delete a "physical printer"?
I am only able to delete the soft printers.
The printer is not listed by Add New Hardware.

Do I have to delete all registry keys such as
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\LPTENUM]

Just use Control Panel|Printers

Deleting a printer in Control Panel | Printers does not delete a "physical
printer".

The printers defined in Printers are just definitions of how to use the
"physical printer".

For example, I could create a printer that instructs windoze to treat the
"physical printer" as if it were a, say, HP LaserJet, even if it is not an
HP Laserjet.

I want the physical printer to be removed so the Add New Hardware wizard
would find it as if it had never been previously connected.

I think you might want KBA 135406
"Steps to Manually Remove and Reinstall a Printer Driver"

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=135406

And suggest full registry backup in advance.

Thanx.

I had already tried that article.

It just removed the drivers, not the printer hardware.

Don't know then, but try lookimg at the various named or OEM* .INF and
..PNF files perhaps.
