hello this is a random post but oh well, i was wondering do you think i may get away with advertising and making a small one person company that makes computers for his local village, im just so bored id make computers with minor profits say 50 extra than the price actually is for instance, or just fixing minor computer problems, i am studying this sorta stuff at college so i just fancy using my skills to get much needed money
ne ideas if it would work? lol

I've considered this idea, but you'd need some working space and you'd also need to spread the word. If you know allot of people who may even know some people then go for it :thumb:
And what do you do if you cannot fix the problem? (and/or discover the source of the problem)

I'm interested to see what people have to say for this too...

thats why it wuld more be building them, im not that good at solving problems but building them i love, ive made my own with my dad two times in a row, and the last one he just sat back and thats it XD haha

If your side of the pond is anywhere near the way it is here it's darn hard to make a buck building them.

Even if you shop for the best deals and as you say add only fifty dollars to the cost you still can't compete with the DELL's of the world who can put out a desktop with an operating system for five hundred bucks.

In this industry more than any other a guy can really tell just how much volume controls pricing.

Us little guys just don't get much of a break when we by an item here and an item there.

I've known of 2 people who tried this & went bust within 1 year!
With pc's being so cheap these days, on-line & high street prices are very competitive.

Like others have said, building PC's isn't very cost effective any more for most people (plus there are obstacles like warranties etc...). Fixing and Maintenance might be worth looking in to though :)

You may make pocket money from it but it's doubtful you'll make a living, not as a one man outfit anyway.

To be able to carry out repairs effectively, you'll need a motherboard/CPU/memory combination of all the setups you're likely to encounter, to prove faults by elimination where things aren't obvious. I'd imagine that means at least six combinations.

Plus of course spare PSU/monitor/keyboard/mouse/speakers/software. And a workbench.

Also a good set of tools including a quality multimeter, anti-static mat/wrist strap and some good lighting.

Considering that my local pc shop charger £29.50 per hour for repairs it may be possible to pick up some spare cash helping folks with their pc problems .

My friend wanted to put another dvd writer in their pc , at the local shop this would cost £29.50 plus the cost of the unit £35 thats £64.50 in total . Plus taking the pc tp the shop and returning home with it .
I fitted a Lit-on dvd writer , supplied 100 blank cd's , 100 blank dvd's (good quality ones), £7.50 for my time and effort and the total came to £55 .

So you might not get rich but you should be able to make some money .

I work in a factory employing 600 people, i have learned all i know from PC Review, i have dabbled in import markets and now have a reputation as a PC repair man, i have made money from people whose kids (teenagers) have DOWNLOADED nasties... I ask them first of all save or if not capable tell me what needs saving of the PC and then do they mind if i cleanse the machine...they say Yes please and i format , restore and they if I want hand over spondulacs...word of mouth ..great tool :)
