making initials

For a learning activity, I want just the initials of each word in my
text--ie: shorten every word by deleting every letter except the first.
I want to keep the spaces and punctuation.
Looking throught the Find/Replace wildcard options, I'm sure a smarter
person than me could devise a rather simple way to do this, but I can't wrap
my brain around it.
Any ideas?

With the wildcard option enabled, try replacing

<(?)(*)>

by

\1

(that's backslash followed by digit 1, not backslash followed by lower
case letter ell)

Beautiful. I'll look over it to make sure everything's correct, but at first
try (ok, second try, I forgot to turn on wildcards) it looks exactly what I
wanted.
