I was reading John Kelly's response to a question regarding the type of file
that MM2 outputs which is suitable for DVD players. He says that you should
only export to an AVI. I am a beginner, so please understand that I have
limited knowledge of the program. Since you must make an MPEG2 file to
create a DVD, why would you need to make a AVI if you capture video to a WMV?
Can't you go from WMV to MPEG2? Thanks for your help.

Yes you can go from WMV to MPEG2 if the software doing the conversion
supports it.

If you have the choice of DV-AVI or WMV and you're heading to a DVD, then
DV-AVI usually gives you better quality, but it's often a close call when
judging it.

Hello,

OK, yes you can go to WMV if the software that you are going to use to
make the DVD can handle it, and as you rightly say the end result for the
DVD is an Mpeg file....but you would not out of simple choice want to
compress a file to one standard (creating a small loss of quality on the
way) to then expand it to its RAW mode so that it can then be compressed
again down to an MPeg (also creating a small loss of quality on top of the
quality already lost)

I can't remember the words now....its a bit like the Army Captain on the
battle front calling for more ammo...by the time it reaches the
Quartermaster its a statement asking Amy if she is still fired up !!!...OK
its not that bad

...but have you ever tried Army rations??? add water and hope for the
best??? Does it ever taste of what it is supposed too?

If you have the hard drive space do it the DV-AVI method. Even DV-AVI is
compressed by the way...I knew that a long time back...I did not realise how
much until a few months ago when I used another program to create an AVI
file that contained RAW data....it was enormous, in fact I fed it through
Movie Maker to bring its size down...by a factor of nearly 8 times.

So, I hope the reasons are clearer to you now (pardon the pun)
