Can someone please be kind enough to tell me how I can make a CD from a tape
recorder by plugging into the "audio in" on the computer? I can play the
music OK but cannot find out how to transfer to the hard disc. If I get that
far I will be OK!!!

Been experimenting since reading this and have come to the conclusion that,
you need an extra program to do it. something along the lines of a virtual
studio program or something. the only other way is using sound recorder,
through your microphone socket. but that only records in 60sec lumps. of
course you can take a blank recording and keep copying and pasting until you
have something longer, i got to 30 mins then the computer had a sulk. Though
i would like to know if/how it's possible as well so if you get a useful
reply let me know.

You can use Audacity, a free audio editor to record from the line-in jack, and
then edit out any unneeded silence.
