Hi, would appreciate any help anyone might offer here.

Running an HP Pavilion 753n 2.53 Gig P4 with XP

When using Record Now to attempt to copy a CD disc that I made using
this computer I get an error message stating that Record Now cannot
copy a UDF formatted disc.

How do I make backup copies of discs I created on this computer
originally. Note they are files of my own, not music or copyrighted
files. Just want to back up existing discs.

Thanks for any help. Michael Pietrantoni

And what about .cue files I saved a data backup from a
fresh system restore but I can't get it to burn in Nero
Express, any suggestions?

Scott

Please explain "can't get it to burn." How are you trying to burn, are you
trying to drag and drop or have the system backup directly to CD? I'm not
familiar with "Nero Express" but if this is a lite version of Nero, it may
not have the InCD component. Assuming you were trying to drag and drop or
backup directly to CD, that would be the problem as packet burning software
is required for that function.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for getting back to me. It doesn't make sense to me. The discs
that I want to backup were recorded on this computer which uses Record
now. How can it not be able to copy something it made in the first
place.
I've worked around it by dragging and dropping folders from the CD to
the HD and then just reburning a new CD - but it just seems silly that
Record now can't back up something it made in the first place.

Oh well. Like I said thanks for getting back to me.

Were these music files by any chance, MP3s for example? If yes, they have
some form of protection that might be the source of the issue.

Hi, Mike ...

HP's 'Record Now' doesn't do UDF files ... rather there is a separate HP
program called DLA which formats the disc to UDF. It allows you to drag and
drop files to the cd from Explorer. Or, it's possible you installed and use
Roxio's DirectCD to create that cd, but it's the same idea. That's why you
can now drag and drop from the cd to your HD. From then on, that particular
cd can only be used in that way. If you want to change the cd so it can be
used by Record Now', you'll have to do a full erase (and lose everything on
it) from the Record Now program ... otherwise, use a fresh cd.

So, if the disk is saying it's UDF, and it was created using an HP program,
it most likely was created by using DLA. Just rt-click on any folder in
Explorer and, if it says DLA, then it's already installed. If not, you'll
have to go to the HP 'Software and Downloads' site for your particular cd
burner and download and install DLA ... or, install DirectCD if you have
that program (Beware ... only the latest versions work with XP).

I should clarify my previous posting to read "rt-click on any cd drive and,
if it says DLA ..."

Right click on the CD-RW drive and it says "Use with DLA", there will be a check mark there.

Hi Fred,

Thanks much for the explanation. I din't realize that RecordNow wasn't
the default program used when I saved stuff to CDR's. I did indeed
check and the DLA thing is checked. So I guess that explains the
incompatibility. Thank you much for that.

Might you know if there is a way to use DLA to copy a disc it burned ?
All I'm trying to do is simply make a backup of some CDR discs I
burned with simple jpg and .txt files.

Again, appreciate you getting back to me and clearing this up. Thanks
much.
