Making an external hard drive and make it bootable

How can I copy windows xp onto an external hard drive and make it
bootable because on my laptop the cd drive is faulty so i need to be
able to boot the laptop using an external hard drive to reinstall
windows xp

This approach probably will not work due to the way Windows XP installs.
Consider the alternative of using an external USB CD drive. If the laptop's
bios allows it, the external CD drive could bootable to allow booting from
the Windows XP cdrom itself.
