Is there any way to link a PPT document to a database to have it use the data
to build a slide, similar to a mail merge?

For example, I am doing a slideshow of all the executives of a company to
roll during the walk-in of a show. Instead of manually typing in and
creating all the names, could I make a database with all the names, photo
filename information, title, etc. into an Access database or Excel worksheet
and then make one MASTER slide with the appropriate 'string' names that will
build the 400 slides I need for the program?

Not directly out of PowerPoint as it comes from the box, but visit
http://merge.pptools.com for an inexpensive commercial add-in that does exactly
this.

There's a free demo - definitely try it first to make sure this is what you
need.
