Making a photo smaller for email

I have WindowsXP Home SP3. When emailing a photo from "My Pictures" folder I
click on "E-mail this file" in the "Picture Tasks" column on the left . This
would then show a window asking if I want to make the picture smaller before
taking it to my Outlook Express for emailing.
This link to making the picture smaller has suddenly stopped appearing. How
can I get this back again?

Try this, maybe it will restore the option:

Go to...Start / Run and type
(or copy/paste):

"REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.

A dialog box should report the following:

"DllRegisterServer in SHIMGVW.DLL succeeded"

Also...

There is a free PowerToy called
ImageResizer...you can download it at
the following link:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

After it's installed, you can open any folder
that contains images and you will have an
option to resize. Just right click the selected
image files and choose Resize Pictures.
You can select one image or a whole group.

The program will place the resized copies in
the folder with your originals.

BTW...when resizing if you go to...Advanced
Button / Custom...and enter 640 in each field...
that will be a good size for e-mail purposes.

Thanks John for your help. The Start/Run advice did not produce the result I
was looking for although I did receive the succeeded message. I think that
perhaps I did not correctly explain my problem. I do have the link in the
"Picture Tasks" column however when I click on this it shows me directly to
my Outlook Express email program without first showing the small window that
asks me to reduce the size of the picture. It's this small window I would
like to recover.
Can you help with this?
I do have the PowerToy and as a last result will have to use this.

Your original mesage was clear and the command
should have restored the resize dialog.

Maybe the following command will do it for you:

Go to...Start / Run and type
(or copy/paste):

regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll
(yes, the space after the 2 and the space
after the i is required)

Press...Enter...

You should see a dialog box that says:
DllRegisterServer and DllInstall in shimgvw.dll succeeded

Next...try the following:

Enable / Disable Resize Graphic - Send To
Have a look at line 269

Thanks again John you're a patient helper. The Start/Run was the same
result as before, it succeeded however still no window to make the picture
smaller.
Re; Kelly's-Korner line 269 this shows my .jpeg,.jpg and.bmp as
"PersistentHandler" and also as "default". This looks OK to me,
unfortunately as an amateur it does not mean anything to me and still leaves
me behind the eight-ball at the moment.
Any more suggestions would be much appreciated.

========================================================
Did you download and run the "Enable" reg file
[resizeendable.reg] from Kelly's Korner by left clicking it?

Here's another article but it says basically the same
thing you already tried:

Why don't the Resize Pictures dialog
appear while sending picture to e-mail?
http://www.winxptutor.com/resizeimage.htm

Here's another version of the Run command that may
be worth a try:

"regsvr32 %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and %)

If all else has failed....try the following:

"How do I make OE my default mail client?"

Go to...Start / Run...and enter the following:
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /reg<
(copy paste *everything* between the > < but not including the > <)
(But first...Check the path to msimn.exe to make sure it is correct)

Click...OK...

Then open Internet Explorer and go to...Tools / Internet
Options / Programs tab...and set OE as the default mail
(and news) program.

Now try your...Right click / Send to / Mail recipient /
Make pictures smaller / OK...

Your latest suggestion to try in the Run command also came up as succeeded
however didn't fix the problem. The other one ending in MSIMN.EXE"/reg
didn't work, my Run command informed me that it is unable to find it
although MSIMN is listed in my program files.
In Kelly's-korner I did enable line 269 unfortunately this had no effect. In
line 269 it shows jpeg, jpg, and bmp as; perceived type=image. In my Run
command; regedit they show as; PersistentHandler, default, Reg SZ and a
large data number. This remained the same after enabling line 269. The
problem was not fixed.
I have used Google Chrome as my default browser for a couple of months and
to make OE(and news) my default programs I have made IE my default browser
again, however this has not fixed my problem either.

The........."Now try your...Right click / Send to / Mail recipient /Make
pictures smaller / OK.." sends the picture directly to OE, the "Make
pictures smaller" option is not there.

Thank you for your assistance, any other suggestions are most welcome.

Try this simpler version of the command:

Go to...Start / Run...and enter the following:

msimn /reg

(no dialog box should appear)

Click...OK...

Then open Internet Explorer and go to...
Tools / Internet Options / Programs tab...
and set OE as the default mail (and news)
program.

That's it...I'm out of ideas.

If you find the fix...please share it with us.

Your last Start/Run was unsuccessful, the same as before the message was
that Windows was unable to find it.
Thanks for all your help. I have had my computer about 5 years or so and
used the "Make pictures smaller" link frequently during the period. The last
time probably about 3 weeks ago and now it's gone. Something must have done
it, perhaps some update or download. I'll continue to try and solve it in
"public windows XP general". I'll let you know in this group if I am
lucky, cheers.

Three weeks is not so long...you may consider
doing a system restore to a time before this issue
began.

I had the same exact problem, DL'ed Windows Live Mail, and replaced OE with
it and now the photo resize came back

Thanks for your suggestion. I installed Live mail about a month ago and had
some problem with it (Not related to OE) and did a restore to the previous
day at that time so I don't really know if this also affected my OE problem.
I have tried all the other earlier suggestions without success so it appears
I'll be stuck with it.
It may be a coincidence but I have the Melville High School just up the road
from me. I am in Applecross Australia. Is this you?
