can someone tell me how i can turn my movie maker file into a file in which
MyDVD will read so i can burn it to a DVD. Movie Maker does not allow me to
save the file as anything but a MSWMM, and I under stand it needs to be an
AVI (?) but i can't for the life of me figure out how to do it.

Hello there,

Click on FILE > SAVE MOVIE FILE and follow the dialog to the point where you
are asked what format, click on SHOW MORE OPTIONS and then select DV-AVI.

hi,
I am trying to make a "DVD player' readable format. But 146MB size movie
(WMV format) when converted into DVI-AV (NTSC) format, size increases to
12GB. Is this normal. Is there any compressing technique or some solution so
my entire movie can go on to one DVD-disk (DVD player redable).

Thanks in advance,
Uday

The file format that is written on a DVD Video is neither WMV nor DV AVI. It
is MPEG2, whose size will be more than a wmv but quite less than DV AVI. So
to know whether or not your movie will reside on a dvd; you should first
convert it to MPEG2 format.

You can use TMPGenc/Procoder to convert to MPEG2 or some other application.
Some DVD authoring packages such as My DVD do the encodng for you but they
dont offer much control on parameter tweaking. With a high bitrate of 8Mbps
(as used by MyDVD) you would be able to fit about an hour long video on a
dvd.

Also see: www.rehanfx.org/faq.htm

Thanks for your quick response Rehan. After converting movie into MPEG (I
selected MPEG2 while converting, but it says movie.MPEG after converting), I
tried to run it using a dvd player software, but it failed. does that mean it
would't play in a regular DVD player.
(Files on a regular movie DVD are in *.VOB format. )

Thanks in advance,
Uday

The extension is .mpg or .mpeg for both MPEG1 and MPEG2.

If it failed in dvd software then there must be something wrong with it. Try
it with Media Player Classic which uses its own mpeg2 codec. This would
eliminate if the dvd software is at fault.

Did you use any non standard settings when encoding to MPEG2 ?

VOB is a packaging format for multiplexing the video (mpeg2), audio
(ac3/pcm/mp2) and subtitle streams. These get generated by the Authoring
step of DVD Movie making.

JOhn

The choices are not available...I 've downloade EVERY NERO software and
still cannot receord onto t my DVD+R

You can't save directly to a DVD in Movie Maker,
if that's what you're trying to do.

Follow John's instructions to save your movie
as a DV-AVI file in Movie Maker.

Then use NeroVision Express to import that
DV-AVI file, and author & burn your DVD.

Hello,

Sorry for the delay in answering you.

The instruction I gave was meant to apply to Movie Maker not Nero...so,
lets go through it all in one...

Having edited your movie in movie maker...

1) In Movie Maker click on FILE > SAVE MOVIE FILE

2) Carefully complete the information asked for in the wizard making a
written note of EXACTLY where you are going to save your Movie

3) When it asks what format you want answer by selecting DV-AVI in the drop
down combo box. If you do not see the option DV-AVI then just below the
drop down box there is another option called Show More Options (or
choices). Select that and then go find DV-AVI

4) The process may take quite a while...dependent on size of eventual file,
complexity of transitions and effects etc etc.

5) When it has finished...Click on FILE > SAVE (this is not the same as
Save Movie) The result will be that your project is saved just in case you
need to go back and do it all again.

START NERO VISION EXPRESS . The following is based on version 3 of this
spftware.

6) Click on Make DVD then click on DVD-VIDEO [DO not select DVD-Video (VR)]

7) Click on Add Video Files, navigate to the location you saved your video
, select it and click open

8) Click on Create Chapters.

9) By clicking on the timeline first at roughly the place you want a
chapter point to appear and then fine tuning it with the time indicator and
then clicking on the last Icon ion the row of Icons you will create a
chapter point. A chapter point has a small inverted triangle at thgge top
of the vertical line. You can change the location of that chapter point at
any time by selecting it and drag drop or alter the time indicator.

10) Click on Next, you will now be looking at the menu that will be
displayed on your TV set....

11) Click anywhere on that menu and by using the options down the right
hand side you can change the main menu so that it has the look and feel you
want. If you have more than one menu screen (see the "Select A Menu" option
at the top of the display) you can move to that menu and give it a look and
feel completly different to the main/previous one. After you have
experimented with the menu options you will find that you can double click
the video for the particular chapter and alter the picture shown and if you
selected Animate at the top of the Buttons Menu you can also specify in
seconds how much is displayed on each of those buttons. You can if you
prefer make the background animated and have static buttons...play around
with it untill you find what suits your needs best....I always recomend
start simple accept defaults and work up from there.

12) Click Next and see a preview of your complete DVD (but without the
animation)...if its OK click Next again or Back to change what you do not
like.

13) You now have some options regarding the Buring of the disk. My
preference is to make it burn an IMAGE to your hard drive...note that you
are not asked for the actual location untill it is ready to use the info.
With the main part of Nero you can "Mount an Image" as a virtual
drive....this means you can play with the DVD as if it were a real disk on
your computer....untill you are certain and assuming you have the disk
space its a good idea to take this step...it lets you check it out real
time....and it also gives you the ability to burn a second disk if your
first disk gets screwed up during the burn procedd...saves a lot of time if
that happens

I have not mentioned anything about Bit Rates. IF you get a warning that
your video is too big to fit on a standard DVD you must click on "More >>>"
then "Video Options" then "DVD-Video" and change the bitrate settings.
Again, untill you know more leave Sample Format at AUTOMATIC. With the
Quality setting change it to CUSTOM and then manipulate the bit rate so
that video size progress bar at the bottom of the screen indicates that it
only just fits inside the small red dotted vertical line. Then click on
Next etc and proceed as above......

That should get you going OK...if not do say so

Hello,

With regard to the person using the name RINO. You are advised to ignore
him....he always interprets the question asked badly and on top of that his
answers are always often wrong. Nero can and does burn DVD's straight from
the box, as he puts it. You do NOT need to download any module when using
Nero 6 or Nero Vision Express 3. His answer to you is haplessly wrong and
will have no doubt confused you quite a lot.
