I want to use my home PC, running XP Home Edition, for
both work and family use. It has 2 hard discs and I want
to make one invisible to the kids, ie cannot see it on
Explorer or open any files on it. I have set up 2
accounts, me as administrator, the other as limited. I anm
having trouble with making the second hard drive private.
I tried the convert e:/fs:ntfs routine in DOS but got
stumped when asked for the volume label, so the convert
did not happen. Any suggestions as to volume label would
be useful. (I think it might be MS-DOS as in Explorer it
appears as E MS DOS). My other idea is to re format E. Is
it possible to re-format as NTFS. I understand that if the
disc is NTFS rather than FAT32, as at present, I can make
it invisible to the other users.
Any help would be appreciated. Cheers, Paul

Well for the volume lable you can simply press "Enter", as i believe it says
something like "press enter for none".

As far as hiding it, I know that you can make it inacessible to the other
users, but as far as hiding it... im not sure.

Here is how you would want to make it unavailable to other users.

Boot to safe mode (press F8 repeatedly when booting), and log onto an
account with Admin privelages (probobally your own).

Right click on the hard drive you want to protect and then click on the
"security" tab.

Then click on "Advanced".

Then click on "add" and select the users that you want to deny permission
to, and click on all the check boxes for what you want you deny.

Also i dont believe the encryption that you are talking about when you say
hide a drive, is available in in XP Home, Only in Pro

you have converted your file system to ntfs on other disk
also first disk is fat32 file system . now fat32 does'nt
understand what ntfs file system is . niether fat32 not
fat will understand ntfs file system

to convert to ntfs file system the syntax is
convert.exe <drive> /fs:ntfs.
once converted to ntfs it can't be reverted back to fat32
file system. until unless entire data is earsed..
