Whenever I try to make a chart from data in excel, it returns " The program
has enountered an error and will shut itself down down" and then it does. How
can I make a chart?
About the best I can suggest is to do more diagostics or repair. And,
keep in mind that it is your machine. Don't do something you don't
feel comfortable with since you accept responsibility if any of the
below causes further problems.
You may just want to skip to the last step. It will take the longest
but requires the least amount of work on your part.
Does the problem occur with only a particular file? If so, that file
may be on the verge of corruption. Copy the data to another file.
Depending on how complicated this file architecture is the process may
be trivial to very difficult.
Do you have any add-ins? If so, disable them. Do you have anything in
your personal.xls file? If so, move that file temporarily to another
folder. Do the same with other files in the start up and alternative
start up folders. If this works, you can identify the cause of the
problem.
If this still doesn't work, unregister and re-register XL. Run XL from
the Windows command line with "c:\{full path name to *your* copy of}
\excel.exe /unregserver and then run XL again this time with /regserver
If that still doesn't work, delete the .xlb file (you will have to use
Windows Search to find it). Note that this will delete any
customization you did to your toolbars, etc.
If this still doesn't work, repair the software. Note that this may
require you to use your Office installation CD/DVD. If you don't have
it/them, do *not* start this process. Run XL and select Help | Detect
and Repair...If even this doesn't work, uninstall XL / Office and
reinstall it.
Or, it might be something trivial that I've overlooked and someone else
will point out... {grin}
