Make text have a value??

HI

Hi I was wondering if it was at all possible to make text
have a value in Excel?
For example, I was people to Choose A, B, or C from a drop
down and was hoping that i would be able to add how many
A's, B's, C's are chosen... is this possible. To make A be
equal to 1, for example?
