Why don't Microsoft make Windows Defender part of the operating system,
like the firewall was with SP2?

Hi Marc;

Mike Nash (Moderator):

Q: [1] ccan you tell us moer about windows defender & any eta?

A: We're continuing development of Windows Defender (formerly Windows
AntiSpyware) beta 2 for Windows XP and building it into Windows Vista. It will
appear in the next Windows Vista CTP build. We expect the XP beta 2 version in
the first half of 2006. You can follow progress on the new antimalware blog at
<http://blogs.technet.com/antimalware/>;.

It'll be included in all versions of Vista, and provision made in the
Security Center for monitoring it or third-party anti-spyware apps.

It'll also be included in two Microsoft security suites--one for consumers:
Windows OneCare Live,
and another for managed business networks:
Microsoft Client Protection.

And, it will be available at no additional cost for users of XP and Windows
Server 2003.
That's pretty pervasive, I think.

MS can't include it as a part of SP2 since SP2 has already been released.
They would have to wait until the app goes final, and then include that final
version in a new service pack, SP3. However, this is unlikely to happen
since Windows Vista is likely to be out before SP3 would be released since
the service pack would have to have a ton of alpha (pre-beta) and beta
testing before it would be released. Since MS stops making service packs for
older versions of its Windows OS once a new OS hits the market, then this
likely will never happen.

I suspect that there will be an SP3 for WinXP because Vista is so different
and will probably have machine specs which a large number of current
machines won't meet. At least I hope so.

I believe that i've seen and heard public discussion of an sP3 for xp--I
wouldn't expect them to modify the security center for antispyware, but
maybe i'm not expecting enough?

If there is an SP3 I will be surprised if it does not include anti-spyware.
But I was surprised by some things that were not in WinXP itself.

The firewall was part of Windows XP Gold release (first release). SP-2 only
enhanced it.
