Q. Why are there two versions of Internet Explorer?
A. There are both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Internet Explorer in Windows
XP Professional x64 Edition. The default browser is the 32-bit version of
Internet Explorer 6. The 32-bit version is the default because many sites
depend on components that haven't been ported to the 64-bit version.

Is he wrong? We have both IE6-32bit and IE6-64bit on system. You can open
either manually. How can someone kill the 64-bit or have the system truly
recognize 32-bit as default? Thanks...

Hi,

I am having a lot of problems with my XP 64 bit OS using IE6-32bit... it
doesn't! The only way I can get internet access is through using the
IE6-64bit... this means that I can't run microsoft outlook, sophos updates
and other software that needs to connect to a server since these products are
looking for the IE6-32bit, can anyone help?

Thanks,
Jess.

I have the same problem. I have searched and searched for two months now
with no resolution. You can manually shutdown IE 64 at the Task Manager.
You can start either 32bit, or 64 bit explorer from the menus. But 32 bit
does not connect to the internet while 64 bit does with no problem. I am
trying to acitivate Office 2003 via the internet. It tells me the internet
not found. So, 32bit software does not know that IE64 is connected.
Can someone provide a workaround, please?

I have the same problem - I can ping internet sites just fine, but 64-bit IE
is the only application that can connect to the internet.

I had the same problem, but fixed it by uninstalling "NVidia Network Access
Manager." I guess it was the NVidia firewall.

Nvidia Network Manager - is this a display manager? I don't see this program
in the add/remove programs? Where did you find it?

Thanks

I'm assuming that you are using a motherboard with an NVidia chipset... Go
into Device Manager, and go into the properties for the NVidia network
adapter. One of the tabs should have buttons to allow you to run NVidia
network utilities (I couldn't get them to run correctly.)

The source that I received my information from said that if you don't have
the NVidia firewall (NVidia Network Manager) installed, you might have to
install and then uninstall it. You can download the NForce drivers from the
NVidia website and probably from your motherboard manufacturer's website, too.

I just uninstalled NVidia Network Manager from Add/Remove Programs, so if
you don't have it there, I would install it and then uninstall, again,
assuming you actually have an NVidia chipset.

If that doesn't work, make sure there are no other firewalls running. Best
of luck.

Hello,
Charlie is correct. 32-bit Internet Explorer is the default. 64-bit
Internet Explorer is available as an option but all the shortcuts, links
and file associations point to 32-bit Internet Explorer.
Thanks,

What kind of answer is that?
Are you from Microsoft?
If yes, you should know XP 64bit HAS the two versions on IE, 32 and 64 bit
installed.

The person is asking why 64 bit fires every time to access live mail instead
of the 32 bit.
then, if he continues using the same browser window to got to other sites,
he may get to a site that requires Flash for instance, and Flash does not run
on XP 64bit, which is dumb from Adobe ayway, no fault of Microsoft, but we
should be able to setup the system so any use of IE would be defaulted to the
32 bit, so most applications and sites would be compatible.
Somewhere it is said 32 bit is the default.
That is wrong.
I use it all the time after browsing through live mail, and I get no Flash
then, and I get a message saying XP 64 bit bit does not run Flash.
All we want it to set the system to use the 32 bit, everything else is good.
