On the "Font" tab of axes, chart title, text boxes, etc.,
is there a way to make "Auto scale" be unchecked by
default? It's really annoying having to select each
element of a chart one by one and turn this off. I've
looked in the overall "Options" dialog of the Tools menu
to no avail. Thanks for any help...maybe this should be
added to new versions if it isn't already there?

You can change a registry setting to make "Off" the default. There are
instructions in the following MSKB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=168650

Warning -- Back up your registry before you make any changes to it!!

If you have Excel 2000, add a new DWORD (AutoChartFontScaling) with
Value Data:0 to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Excel\Options

For Excel 2002, add a new DWORD (AutoChartFontScaling) with Value Data:0 to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Excel\Options

Hi, Debra! Thanks for your prompt reply, but I tried
what you suggested and it didn't work. It is Excel 2002
that I'm using and I did put the option in the right tree
and edit the value of it. I've tried deleting it and
redoing it as well as restarting the computer. New files
still have the auto scale box checked. What else can I
try?

In the Registry, did you choose Edit>New>DWORD Value?

(The article for Excel 97 says to create a String Value)

Oh, no, you're right, I didn't. I picked String Value.
It works now! Thanks very much for your help!
